Texas License-to-Carry Certification Course

Texas is "Free America" and a strong supporter of the 2nd amendment that allows open and concealed carry with a valid Texas LTC (License-to-Carry Permit). This permit is issued by the Department of Public Services. Our course will meet all Texas compliance requirements to get you certified. Our course is fun, educational, inspiring and exciting. We implement PowerPoint presentation, with open discussions and dos and don'ts of concealed or open carrying of your handgun for defensive purposes. We also do a thorough course on Texas Deadly Force.



Teachers, school staff, LEO/EMS/FD, U.S. Military or Pastors attend for free; valid ID required!

The Texas License-to-Carry Certification or open carry handgun course is a certification course and you must have had some form of handgun training prior to attending this course. Prior to attending, please make sure you understand how to do the following safely and effectively:


  1. Handle your handgun safely

  2. Lock your slide to the rear safely

  3. Load your magazines

  4. Shoot your handgun safely and conduct a magazine reload

  5. Load and unload your handgun safely 


If you do not feel comfortable with the above requirements, we highly encourage you to attend our Introduction to Defensive Handgun or Defensive Handgun Course. If you complete any one those two courses, we will give you a 50% discount to attend the Texas License-to-Carry concealed or open carry certification Course. Failure to handle your weapon safely or pass the live fire qualification can result in an embarrassing situation for you, and you may not be able to complete the course in order to get your license.   


TX LTC/Open Carry Live Fire Course of Fire


Stage1: Twenty (20) shots will be fired from 3 yards.


  • Five (5) shots fired in a "One shot exercise" 2 seconds allowed for each shot

  • Ten (10) shots fired in a "Two shot exercise" 3 seconds allowed for each 2 shot sequence

  • Five (5) shots fired in 10 seconds


Stage 2: Twenty (20) shots will be fired from 7 yards - fired 5 stages.


  • Five (5) shots will be fired in 10 seconds

  • Five (5) shots will be fired in 2 stages:

    • Two (2) shots will be fired in 4 seconds

    • Three (3) shots will be fired in 6 seconds

  • Five (5) shots will be fired in a "one shot exercise," 3 seconds allowed for each shot

  • Five (5) shots fired in 15 seconds


Stage 3: Ten (10) shots fired from 15 yards - fired in two 5-shot strings


  • Five (5) shots fired in two stages:

    • Two (2) shots fired in 6 seconds

    • Three (3) shots fired in 9 seconds

  • Five (5) shots fired in 15 seconds


To pass the Texas CHL/Open Carry range qualification, a student must score 70%  (175 points out of a possible 250 points). 50 rounds required with each round worth 5 points for a total maximum score of 250 points.


Optical enhancers such as lasers, red dot sites, or scopes are not permitted by Texas DPS administrative code when qualifying.


The following are step-by-step directions from the range officer as students progress through each stage starting from the 3-yard line, moving back to the 7-yard line, and finally to the 15-yard line.


All shots are fired on a B-27 target. 


1.    Targets will be green, red, black or blue. 

2.    Hits inside the 8, 9, 10, and X rings are 5 points. 

3.    Hits inside the 7 ring are 4 points. 

4.    Hits on the silhouette outside the 7 ring are 3 points. 

5.    Hits outside of the shaded silhouette are 0. 

6.    Hits that miss the target entirely are 0. 

7.    Rounds not fired due to expired time or malfunction are 0.
